SHU women's basketball loses to South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - The Seton Hall women’s basketball team led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but an 18-2 run gave USF a 57-45 win on Wednesday night. The Pirates fell to 7-14 overall and 0-7 in BIG EAST play.

Junior Brittany Morris (Raleigh, N.C.) had nine points to lead the Pirates. Senior Tajay Ashmeade (Bronx, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Jasmine Wynne netted 14 second half points and led all scorers with 19 points.

SHU never trailed in the first half and went ahead 11-5 after a Nicosia Henry (Bolingbrook, Ill.) three-pointer from the left wing with 13:47 left in the first frame. The Pirates continued to play strong on the defensive end, helping them extend the cushion to 26-15 at the 2:25 mark of the first half.

Several Seton Hall turnovers in the closing minutes helped the Bulls (12-9, 4-3) close within 26-21 at the intermission despite the Pirates controlling the tempo for the majority of the period.

The start of the second half was promising for the Pirates as well after pushing the margin to 35-23 after a Morris trey with 15:52 remaining. However, SHU went into an offensive funk and only converted on one field goal attempt over the next 8:46 during the big rally to let USF take a 45-40 advantage.

Senior Jasmine Crew (Camden, N.J.) fouled out of the game with 6:33 remaining, and the Pirates cold shooting continued as the Bulls claimed the come-from-behind victory.

After shooting 40.7 percent in the first half, SHU hit on just a 27.3 clip in the second. USF was just 6-of-30 (20.7 percent) in the opening stanza before heating up to 47.8 percent in the closing 20 minutes. The Bulls also turned 23 turnovers into 25 points.

The Pirates return to Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday, January 28, against #22 DePaul at 2:00 p.m. For tickets, please contact the Seton Hall Ticket Office at (973) 275-HALL or via email at tickets@shu.edu.
