Former South Orange Trustee Terriann Moore-Abrams lost Tuesday to Essex County Democratic leader Philip Thigpen in the race for county register.
With 94 precincts reporting, Thigpen had 90,949 votes to 36,919 for Moore-Abrams, a Republican.
Results are not official until certified by Essex County Clerk Christopher J. Durkin.
County register is a constitutional officer responsible for recording all real estate transactions in the county. Incumbent Carole A. Graves declined to seek re-election.
Thigpen, the county chairman, originally did not plan to seek the office. But Democrat Dwight Brown, who won the primary, died of a heart attack in July.
Given the hefty edge Essex County Democrats have on Republicans in registered voters, the outcome was not a surprise.
