The Columbia High School varsity wrestling team, which finished with a 12-9 mark, was sparked by a slew of standouts this season.
Heavyweight James Goode enjoyed a strong season for the Cougars. Goode, a senior, went 24-8, which included a 12-1 mark in the Super Essex Conference and a 7-0 record in the SEC-Liberty Division.
Goode was second at the Rahway Holiday tournament, fifth at the Essex County Tournament, first at the District 10 tournament and a Region 3 quarterfinalist.
Goode made first-team All-SEC-Liberty Division.
“James Goode was a real standout this year, only his second year on the mat,” said CHS head coach Hal Garwin. “He showed his grit by winning District 10 where the top five 285-pounders were 20-win-plus wrestlers. He defeated two wrestlers who had beaten him during the season and one who finished higher in the county tourney.”
Sophomore 103-pound Khari Jarrett had a 16-8 record as a first-year varsity wrestler, which included a 7-3 mark in the Super Essex Conference and a 5-1 in the SEC-Liberty Division. He also took fourth at the Rahway Holiday tournament. He made honorable mention all-division.
Junior 119-pound Andrew Adams fashioned a 25-10 mark, including a 13-1 mark in the SEC and 10-0 record in the SEC-Liberty to make first-team all-division. He was second at Rahway, sixth at the Essex County Tournament and third at the District 10 tournament.
Adams placed in all three tournaments and won more than 20 matches, both for the second year.
Junior 125-pound Alex Lopez went 18-9. Lopez was 8-4 in the conference and 6-1 in the division. He made second-team all-division. Lopez was first at Rahway and third in the District.
Senior 130-pound David Goldenberg was 19-5. He went 8-2 in the SEC and 5-1 in the division to make second-team all-division. He was first at Rahway, fifth at the ECT and second in the District.
“David Goldenberg fought through knee and skin problems all season to place in all three tourneys,” said Garwin. “He lost only five matches and three were to the same wrestler, all by one point.”
At 189, junior Omar Shabazz fashioned a 13-4 mark, going 8-1 in the SEC and 5-0 in the division. Shabazz was third in the District and was a Region 3 quarterfinalist.
Shabazz only wrestled a half season due to a shoulder injury, but was almost unbeatable, losing in the District by two points to the county and District champ, while pinning in the Region and losing by one point in the quarters to the second-place finisher.
