Columbia High School varsity wrestlers Andrew Adams, Alex Lopez, David Goldenberg, Omar Shabazz and James Goode gave good efforts at the Region 3 tournament in Union.
Adams lost a close match in the last second at the 119-pound weight class against Linden’s Adrian Betancourt, 7-3, in the pre-quarterfinals on Feb. 23, finishing the season with a 23-9 mark that included taking sixth in the Essex County Tournament, third in District 10 and second at the Rahway Holiday tournament. Adams also was named to the inaugural Super Essex Conference-Liberty Division first team.
In the pre-quarterfinals, Lopez, a 125-pounder, wrestled three competitive periods with Rich Szeliga, a good wrestler from South Plainfield, one of the best teams in the state. Lopez finished 16-9, taking third in the District and first at Rahway to earn second-team all-division honors.
Goldenberg also lost in the pre-quarterfinals. He wrestled three competitive periods against Allen Phillips, a state-level wrestler from Brearley, one of the top teams in the state.
He finished 19-5 with three losses to the same Brearley wrestler and battled through several injuries during the season that saw him miss at least five meets. Goldenberg was second in the District, fifth in the ECT and first at the Rahway tournament. He was named first-team All-SEC-Liberty.
Shabazz, a 189-pounder, pinned Cranford’s Errol Petgrave in the pre-quarterfinals. On Feb. 27, Shabazz lost to Governor Livingston’s Frank Colder, 9-4, in the quarterfinals and then was ousted in the wrestleback quarterfinals, losing to Delbarton’s Dean Sullivan, 3-2. Shabazz, who finished 13-4, missed most of the season due to a lingering shoulder injury and was named first-team All-SEC-Liberty.
Goode, a heavyweight who won the District 10 title the previous weekend, dropped a 6-2 decision to Middlesex’s Christian Bollin in the quarterfinals. Goode then lost a tough 3-2 overtime decision to New Providence’s Zach Troutman in the wrestleback quarterfinals to end with a 24-8 record. Goode was fifth in the ECT and second at Rahway. Goode earned first-team All-SEC-Liberty honors. Khari Jarrett was impressive in his first year at 103 for CHS, finishing 16-8 to make All-SEC-Liberty honorable mention. He was fourth at Rahway. After starting 1-5, the Cougars, with mostly newcomers, finished the season with a 12-9 record, third in the SEC-Liberty. The junior varsity team also had a successful season, giving head varsity coach Hal Garwin hope for the future.
