Shaina Martinez waited nearly two years to come face-to-face with the man who killed her 4-year-old son in a South Orange apartment.
“You’re evil,” she said to her ex-boyfriend, Jonathan Ortiz, who was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday for killing Jayden Hayes in April 2008.
Ortiz, who had pleaded guilty to manslaughter as part of a plea deal with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, must serve nearly six years before becoming parole eligible.
The tense courtroom, packed with relatives and supporters for Jayden and Ortiz, included extra security; about 12 sheriff’s officers and plain clothes detectives stood guard inside.
Relatives of the boy became emotional, speaking of how Jayden’s death impacted them and the anger they felt at Ortiz, 20.
“I miss Jayden so much that it kills me,” Martinez said. “Jayden is my life...”
A poster-sized photograph of her only child rested on an easel behind her, a picture of the boy smiling and full of life.
Ortiz was accompanied by his wife, his newborn son and other family. Standing before Superior Court Judge Peter J. Vazquez, he said he was “sorry” and said he loved Jayden.
