Terra Forms

Saturday, June 25th – Friday, July 22nd

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 25th 7 to11pm

Index Art Center is pleased to present Terra Forms, a group exhibition curated by Jeanne Brasile.  Terra Forms is a visual investigation by artists inspired by earthen forms.  The exhibition features artwork informed by topography, geology, tectonics and similar thematic frameworks.  The theme was inspired by the rich tradition of earth art, a movement dating to the late 1960’s that was established by acclaimed artists such as Robert Smithson, Walter De Maria and James Turrell, among others.  Terra Forms re-considers this pivotal art movement with artwork literally fashioned from earthen materials such as dirt, clay and sand, as well as traditional media including oil paint, pigment and photography that reference or depict terrestrial forms.

Exhibiting artists include;  Jacqueline Arias, Andrew Baron, Kathy Goodell, Marc Leone, Greg Leshé, Ruby Merritt, Mimi Weinberg and Sook Yoo.  Curator Jeanne Brasile notes that she was inspired by the writings of artist Robert Smithson as well as her love of the outdoors.  She is an avid hiker and notes, “This exhibition is unusual in that it is a hybrid of my curatorial and personal interests.  I don’t often get to mix those two worlds.”

Index Art Center was established in May 2009 by three of Redsaw Art’s former founders; Lowell Craig, Seth Goodwin, and DC Smith.  Their mission is to help strengthen and revitalize Newark’s emerging art scene.  They wish to create an environment where the local community and artists of all media can come together and take part in a unique dialogue, one which affirms Newark as a center for contemporary art.  Index Art Center is located at 585 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey between Central Avenue and New Street.  It is easily accessible by car, The PATH and NJ Transit.  Hours are Thursdays 6 to 9pm, Fridays and Saturdays 1 – 4pm and by appointment.   Admission is free and open to the public.
